Sturgeon spearing has a rich history on Lake Winnebago and we are going to participate in the festivities. We are working with Wendt’s on the Lake and have rented several spearing shacks. The spearing season opens on 2/8/14. We will gather on Friday afternoon to watch as they cut the holes and place the shacks. Wendt’s does a great job with their shack rental and watching them cut through the ice with a 5 foot long chain saw is something to see. We will scout around on Friday looking for some active fish to prepare for our afternoon fishing segment of this event.
All those that register will be assigned a spot in a shack and will be given a spear to use. The basic how to instructions will be given. Pair up with your buddy in a shack. Some shacks fit two people and some can seat four. The season starts at 6:30 am on Saturday morning and we can spear until 12:30. At that time all spears have to come out of the shacks. We will then move to an area for some ice fishing. Bring your ice fishing gear and join in on the fun. For those of you who did not get your spearing tag and just want to ice fish, feel free to join in. There is also a host of other activities that go on in the area. Lots of local businesses have special celebrations. There are hundreds of people out and about and a variety of colorful shacks in all shapes and sizes.
The DNR has a registration station right near where we are spearing. Its fun to go and see some fish being registered. They take measurements and record the information on the fish that are harvested. They keep a very accurate count so that harvest goals are limited. Once the season meets the harvest cap, the season ends.
The $100 fee for this event includes shack and spear rental for Saturday and Sunday morning. Wendt’s requires the shack be rented for both Saturday and Sunday for the opening weekend. There is no fee if you just want to come out and ice fish. If you can only do one day, I suggest you start a conversation on the members only facebook page and see if someone wants to split the weekend with you, and each of you could take a day.
Cost for this event is $100 which includes the shack and spear rental. There is no fee for the Ice Fishing portion. If you need ice fishing equipment to use, let me know as we have extra gear that you can use. To register, click on the link below
If you have never participated in the activities that surround the Sturgeon Spearing sub culture, you will be amazed. The entire area is a buzz of activity. I am working with the Fond du Lac Area Convention & Visitors Bureau and they are willing to help with our lodging needs. If you need lodging for this event, please indicate that when you register. We are able to get some discount pricing if we can reserve 10 rooms. I am waiting to see how many room we will need and then be able to make a reservation at one of the hotels recommended by the visitors bureau.
If you prefer to pay by check, make it out to WI Women Fish and send it to P.O. Box 447 Oxford WI 53952. Don’t forget to renew your membership for 2014, either on line or mail it in.
To reserve your place in the shack click the link to register. If you know you are attending please register as soon as possible. I have some shacks held for our use but need payment to hold them. These shacks will be all rented out very soon so we want to be sure we have a spot for everyone. Register here.
