Join us for a weekend steelhead fishing. We are headed to the Bois Brule River in Northern WI. This is the weekend after the season opener. By then, winter will be melting away, and flowing downstream to Lake Superior. There are 23 miles of fishable river that we will have access to. Learning the spot to fish is one of the best advantages of this trip.
On Friday night, there will be a seminar with guide Garett Svir from Slab Seeker Guide service. He will teach us how to rig up our rods to drift fish the holes where fish are holding. Each person attending will receive a goodie bag that has Raven floats, tubing, swivels, yarn flies, weights, beads, hooks, spawn sacks, and you will learn how to make a set up for float fishing for steelhead. There will be a hands on fly tying demo for the most popular patterns on the Bois Brule. Those who want to take a fly tying class, and make flies to keep will have an opportunity on Saturday.
Guided trips will have all gear provided. You will need to bring waders and you may need snow shoes. Guide trips are for 1/2 day and will be two anglers and the guide. For those of you fishing on your own, preferred rods are longer and medium action. I use a 9 foot St Croix Wild River med-heavy with a fast action tip. I spool it with Raven HI-Vis floating mono line. Hi-vis line is preferred. Having extra floats on hand is a good idea.
For those fishing job your own, we will break up into small groups and access the river at new spots we learn. You will need waders and you should probably bring snow shoes. Some use walking sticks. This is a physically challenging event, but spots can be accessed that don’t require as much difficulty.
The seminar will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday night. Address will be provided. On Saturday, there will be two groups fulling guided. The first group ( 2 anglers) meet the guide at 5:30 am at the Brule River Motel. The second groups meets at 1:00 p.m. at the same place. Sunday morning there will be two more fully guided trips or people can pair up and fish on their own.
The scenery is beautiful and I just love this event. Hiking along the river is amazing. What a great motivator to seat to do a little hiking ahead of time to prepare for this trip. You can register here.
