For the last two years we have been trying to participate in the Powder Puff Tournament that the Wharf sponsors the third weekend in July. This is a Ladies only salmon tournament out of Sheboygan WI. Most ladies who attend have hired charter boats to take them out for the day. The Charter Boats can only have the Captain on board besides up to 6 ladies. High winds have canceled the event for our last two attempts. We have our fingers crossed. Some of the gals that were signed up carried over their spots but we do have a few remaining spots available.
WI Women Fish has reserved 4 boats from Dumper Dan and we hope to finally be able to participate in the tournament this year. We decided that since everyone will be in town anyway, we will do a seminar on how to shore fish for these salmon. Generally shore fishing for salmon is not the greatest in July, but depending on the winds, occasionally it can be.
There are many ports around the west side of Lake Michigan that are good for shore fishing in the fall. Once you know a few tricks on how to do it, you can be ready for the salmon run.
The Powderpuff tournament starts really in the morning so you should plan on spending the night in the area. After the tournament, the Wharf has a gathering with live music, raffles and they announce the winners of the tournament. Most people make a weekend out of it. There are several hotel options in the area but the ones near the lake front tend to fill up quick. Dumper Dan does have condos available right were the boat departs from.
If the event gets cancelled due to weather, the party will go on and the cash awards that would have been given to the biggest fish, will be given in the raffle.
Tickets for this event include a spot in the charter boat with one of four WI Women Fish teams. The Powder Puff event does have an entry fee of approximately $25 and does include a shirt. Each boat will have a team Captain and the Captain will be responsible for collecting the teams tournament entry fee’s and shirt sizes.
NOTE: Feel free to bring your own boat to Captain. The photos posted here and photos of Captain Barb Carey’s boat which she takes to the tournament every year.
