Oak Island, MN
Fishing Oak Island in the NW Angle of MN is quite an adventure. It is the northernmost point in the US and there you will find the trademark sign marking the spot. The fishing is fantastic. Walley, pike, musky and a variety of species are available to target. If you want to fish entirely in MN that is an option. If we decide to take a day and fish the Canadian waters, we can do that also. The entire area is magnificent and the natural beauty, wildlife, and fishing is hard to beat.
We have nearly the entire resort reserved. We are here to give you support as you embark upon this incredible adventure. The Northwest Angle of Minnesota is located approximately 65 miles from either Warroad or Roseau, Minnesota. This 1 to 2 hour scenic drive takes you through the international boundary of the United States and Canada to Young’s Bay which is located at the Northwest Angle. Young’s Bay Resort offers convenient parking and boat launching facilities. You can get a launch pass and park in the parking lot while you are on the island. Launch fee $10. Parking $6 per day for vehicle and trailer, $3 per day for vehicle only. From Youngs Bay to Oak Island is approximately 6 miles by boat.
Border Crossing Information
BREAKING NEWS – Some gals that do not want to cross the border are taking the charter boat over. There is room for you!!
Canada requires a valid driver’s license and birth certificate, or a passport for proof of identity and citizenship. The US requires a valid passport.
Generally people who bring boats drive the short trek through Canada and reenter the USA.
If you plan to drive, it is approximately a 40 miles drive through Canada, and re-entering back into the U.S. up at the Angle. There is one small Canadian town on the way, which has a store to pick up any items that were left behind or were not allowed to be brought into Canada.
Travelers crossing the border at Warroad or Roseau will be stopped briefly to get cleared to enter Canada by the CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) border station. Here you and all passengers will need a Passport. Once you re-enter the United States up at the NW Angle, you will need to check in with the U.S. Customs. This is an unmanned border, but you still need to check in with U.S. Customs as you entered the country from another country (Canada). You can proceed to one of the three check in stations at the Angle or do as most travelers do, check in at one of the many resorts that have a designated iPad once you arrive. This check in normally takes less than 5 minutes from start to finish.
We have most of the Oak Island resort reserved. The resort is located on the northwest side of Oak Island, Minnesota on one of the approximately 14,500 islands in Lake of the Woods. There our cabins await. Our boats will be parked on the docks and that will be our assigned spot for our stay. A 50 foot cord should be plenty to keep your boat all charged up as there are plenty of outlets to choose from. We will have helpers transport our gear to our cabins. The cabins have carried styles and hold a variety of people based on the layout. Here is a link to the cabin descriptions. https://oakislandresort.com/lodge-cabins-lake-of-the-woods/ We will be having in-depth conversations on the members only page with those that are attending.
The Fishing:
Fishing the Northwest Angle of Minnesota offers premier walleye action, big pike and huge musky. The fishing is not complicated and often jigging with minnows or trolling crankbaits along rocky points and islands in 12–31 feet of water. Colors that are effective include gold, glow, or pink lures. Targeting wind blown points or targeting underwater reefs/flats can be the trick. We will provide you with up to date tips and locations and we will be fishing in groups.

Options besides driving across the border:
Some choose to travel to the Angle across the lake which keeps you in Minnesota and avoids crossing the border. When you travel across the lake and stay in Minnesota, you have not entered Canada and do not need to clear customs upon entering the NW Angle. There are a number of options.
Boat to the Angle aboard a charter boat. If you prefer to avoid customs, boating across the lake on a charter boat is an option.
Launch Services. Northwest Angle Island Passenger Service offers launch transportation to the resort from Young’s Bay and is available on a first come first serve basis.
Launch Services-South Shore. Ford’s Transport Services offers on demand transportation to Oak Island resort from Rocky Point. Call 218-783-7356 or 218-689-1533 for details.
Lake of the Woods Passenger Service offers on demand transportation to our resort from Sportsman’s Lodge on Rainy River. Call 218-634-1342 or 218-556-9444 for details.
Another option is via the Lake of the Woods Passenger Service https://www.lowpassenger.com/ is one option. These large boats will transport you and your gear to your favorite NW Angle resort and transport you back south when your stay at the Angle is complete.
Boat to the Angle on your own. As long as you have a large boat that can handle big water and the experience on big water, boating across the lake, about 40 miles across, is a viable option. Lake of the Woods is big water. Even the most experienced captain with the right gear closely watches the weather, wind, waves, etc., making good decisions about when it is safe for travel and when it is not. Having some extra time is always advantageous in the event you have to leave the next day when there is more favorable weather.
Fly to the Angle! Whether it is summer or winter, flying across the lake is a quick 15 minute flight. If you own a small float plane and are a pilot, many of our resorts are used to catering to float planes in the open water months. There is actually a seaplane base at Sunset Lodge on Oak Island (https://skyvector.com/airport/4MN2/Oak-Seaplane%20Base).
