Welcome to the 9th annual Fish Camp. Fish Camp is a place where anglers get together, share information, improve their skills and have some fun. This year we are once again having Fish Camp on the Moen Chain of Lakes in Rhinelander, WI. We will be staying at Pine Valley Lodge where fully stocked cabins are waiting for us. There is a sandy beach, pier space for docking your boats, and a large meeting area to hold classes and have our gatherings.
Moen Lake is the first lake in a chain of lakes and you can access several lakes which are attached. This water is a Class A musky lake and also hold a variety of other fish. The water is stained so keep that in mind when selecting your baits. We will have access to the resorts pontoon boat and last year, the group, who named themselves the “Fanglers” were at the right place at the right time to save a man’s life. They had a memorable day.
We begin the weekend at noon on Friday, where we have opening ceremonies. We encourage everyone to make it to the full event. We will be having a tribute to the two members we lost this year, Teresa Zais and Gretta Pugh. A list of the schedule is shown below.
When you register, you will be able to sign up to volunteer to be a mentor. For those of you experienced anglers, this is a way for you to help a new angler. For new anglers, when you check in to Fish Camp, you will be able to request a topic you would like to learn more about, and then you will be paired up with a mentor for an information sharing session. With this format, we are able to address each person requests for information, and be able to cover more topics. Some topics may include, trolling, drift fishing, shore fishing for salmon, electronics, musky fishing, knots, fishing with soft plastics, slip bobbers, or general fishing questions.
In addition to our mentor program, we are offering these classes:
Fly Tying
Advanced Fly Tying
Boating Basics
Gopro and Water Wolf Camera
Smoking fish and meat
River Kayak Fishing.
Some classes have limited space. If you do not see a class offered on the registration form, that class is full. Classes filled on a first come basis. Our Fly Tying classes are taught by Nome Buckman. Nome is a licensed fishing guide and is able to create beautiful fly’s that not only catch fish but are also pieces of art. Nome guides in the U.P of Michigan and owns Reel North LLC. Nome worked as a Fly Fishing Guide in multiple states and has many stunning pictures of her catching monster trout and salmon on a fly. Her fly tying lessons have been so popular, we asked her back this year as the demand for her expertise was very high. Last year, she tied up a fly she thought would work, and went out for a brief fishing outing and landed a nice Musky. She was also crowned the 2014 Angler of the Year. Needless to say we were all impressed. If you want a reel adventure, book a trip with her for huge river salmon.
Nome will be assisted by Barb M. She took a class from Nome several years ago and has been diligently tying flies ever since. She has posted some beautiful pictures of her craft, and last year she brought a fly for everyone who attended.
The weekend will include lodging, dinner Saturday night, a bucket raffle and a fun tournament. We have been collecting a lot of great raffle prizes and the goodie bags have some fun stuff. There will be classes and outings to pick from. Each person will get a goodie bag and long sleeve T shirt with this years Fish Camp logo on it. In addition to the wonderful full meal on Saturday night, we also have a Bloody Mary bar, and a coffee bar. The group area at the resort offers a great place to gather and socialize.
A big thanks to Kim and Kim for taking on the chore of feeding us. We need 5 people to bring a dessert. ( one batch each for a total servings for 50 ) On the menu this year is pulled pork and pulled chicken. The chickens were raised by our member Christy and Kim is bringing her smoker. Those who are signed up for the smoking fish and meat clinic, will actually be part of the process. We hope to add a salmon option but that remains to be seen. Depends if Lake Michigan will give any up for me.
Saturday night entertainment is provided by Kathy and Debbie. They have something up their sleeve and I don’t even know what it is. I asked for a hint and this is what they told me “ Life is short…get a stick…mark it…take a spin”. I have no idea what that means but I trust a good time will be had by all.
The cabins come in a variety of sizes. It helps us if you and your buddies let us know if you want to share a cabin. We are happy to assign cabin space for those looking for a roommate. Full kitchens are provided. Bring your own bedding and towels, and paper products. If you bring flat sheets or a sleeping bag, that will work with no matter what size bed you end up with. Bring a chair to sit by the fire pit. We will provide wood. When you register, please help us out and let us know if you will be sharing a bed with someone. The more we can squeeze in the better.
WI Women Fish merchandise will be available to purchase at specific times during the weekend. On Sunday, we will have a fun tournament in the morning, and end the day with our awards and bucket raffle. Sunday night lodging is available for an additional fee. We are offering a early bird discount for this years Fish Camp and if you register before August 15th, the price is $140. The price after August 15th is $150. Pine Valley Lodge does have 4 kayaks for rent for $10 a day. They also have boats and motors for rent for $20 a day. Row boats are free to use but a row boat with a motor will cost you $20 per day. You can’t beat those prices. If you want to reserve one, call George at 715-499-1861.
Each year at Fish Camp we have our annual awards ceremony. This year we are asking for input from other members. Here is a list of the awards we give out, with a description attached. Please put some time into thinking about this and nominating someone you see that would be deserving of an award. A description of the awards can be read on the form. Here is the link.
As always, you will be asked to help out with tasks as needed. We will need help shuttling for the Kayak trip, general kitchen help and a variety of other things. This years schedule has free time built in so you can explore the lakes and do more fishing. SOLD OUT SOLD OUT
