Welcome to the 10th annual Fish Camp. My how time flies. Ten years ago, twenty of us were shore fishing from Buckhorn State park at the very first Fish Camp. That event still holds special memories for those of us that were there.
Fast forward 10 years, and we are still sharing the passion for fishing with as many Women as we can. This year Fish Camp will be held on The Turtle Flambeau Scenic Wilderness Waters Area. With over 200 miles of shoreline, and over 12000 acres of water, there will be plenty of places to find some fish. Kayaks and small boats can find back bays, islands and stump fields. The larger boats try to stay within the river channels and to avoid the area’s with stumps and hazards. The water level fluctuates so at times hazards are visible and other times under the surface of the stained water.
Our accommodations will include cabins at Donner’s Bay Resort. Right next door we have several A frame cabins right on the water. Our group meeting place with be at Cedar Lodge. The lodge is a huge log cabin that has 11 bedrooms, a giant kitchen, and plenty of space to hold our group activities. Large screen T.V’s, a huge bar, and an open area for our entertainment and meetings. We will have access to several resorts boats to use and some motor rentals are available. We also rented a pontoon boat and hope to get everyone out on the water.
On your way to Fish Camp, you most likely will pass through Mercer WI, located on Hwy 51 in Northern WI. We have some fish camp sponsors in town, and they are holding a raffle with great prize packages. You must stop in the business to enter the drawing. The first is Turtle River Trading Company, which is a great bait shop that carries all the bait and tackle you will need. They are located at 5227 N US Highway 51. Next is the Wampam Shop. This has to be one of the coolest gift stores ever and a great place to pick up a gift for people of all ages. They are located at 5257 N US Highway 51 Mercer, WI. The Subway restaurant is also participating. You could win a footlong sub! They do offer to go box lunches if requested. Subway is at 5116 US-51, Mercer, WI 54547.
Although Fish Camp does not officially start until Friday, we are having an early bird event to help get us dialed into the bite. Dale Anderson, from Mercer Muskies and More guide service will be giving a seminar on Thursday night at 7 p.m. Several of us will be there early to attend this seminar and will be sharing the information with those that can not make it.
Fish Camp will officially start at 6 p.m. on Friday Oct, 7th. You can arrive anytime on on Friday or, come a day early. Early birds will be helping with set up and hopefully get some fishing in. We start out Fish Camp with the opening ceremonies followed by a guest speaker. Sally Sumption from Fishing Hot Spots maps will teach us how to get the most out of the maps in our quests to find fish. After Sally’s presentation, the ones who attended the seminar with Dale Anderson will share the information on fishing the Turtle Flambeau. If you need help rigging your rod, experienced club members will give you a hand.
Saturday morning is open and I am sure most people will be anxious to get out onto the water and fish. We will have a a few 50 minute seminar segments that start at noon.
